A Personal Note from your Webmaster
A week has passed since your spectacular
Reunion was held on
Columbus Day weekend, October 10th, 11th and 12th, 2008.
A WEEK ALREADY! The feedback and other comments we've received so
far have been nothing short of INCREDIBLE and we thank all of you.
When this crazy, nutty idea was born well over a year
ago, my
involvement was simply to help with the gathering of contact
information and in putting together a website so we'd have something
to show for our efforts. Little did I know how those efforts would
grow into something far beyond our original design.
As part of the Committee and NOT a classmate of the
Class of 78, I
had a unique perspective watching the process of putting together
this reunion. I saw your faces in the yearbooks, read your names in
the commencement programs, heard all the stories (many, MANY stories
over and over again!) and began to get a sense of what it was like
going to school in Long Beach. But more than that, what YOUR life
was like growing up and living in a town where having "sand in
your
shoes" had a much greater meaning.
Friday night at Paddy McGee's, Saturday night at Manor
East and
Sunday afternoon in the Long Beach High School cafeteria were all
"Twilight Zone" moments for me as I saw and RECOGNIZED so
many of
you from many months of total immersion into Long Beach life.
"I know you!" ran through my head so many times, I lost count
early on!
I knew that having been inducted by the Reunion Committee
as an
Honorary Member meant getting to do more work (what else?), but it
also meant a chance to be part of something unbelievable that we
were creating ourselves! I had no idea what ultimate direction this
was going or what to expect when this whole reunion thing finally
happened, so I prepared myself for one heck of a ride.
Sitting there Saturday night at Manor East watching
the Reunion
Video with all of you, it was as surreal a moment as it could be.
Recognizing people, both classmates and teachers, seeing places that
I actually know the locations of and watching your faces go from
smiles to laughter to tears and back to smiles again. It felt like
I had walked those halls at Long Beach High with all of you, passing
the lockers in the hallways, going up and down the steps, stopping
at the Upper Commons to take a long look around, turning corners to
find the bathrooms and looking at the unlimited beauty through
the cafeteria windows.
I now understand how special those places were to all
of you and how
this reunion just cemented those feelings for all time. What a
pleasure for me to "time travel" with you back to 1978, however
brief. It was "only the beginning" 30 years ago and it's still
that way now. Who knows what will eventually come out of our
"Three Days in October", but no matter how you slice it, it
looks
like WE made it!

toward institutions of learning, but has expanded far beyond that.

anyone and provides a really easy way to keep connected. It operates
like one big chat room, but with the ease of using email.
